Player Profile : Sarah Ussher (2nds)

Name? Sarah Ussher

How long have you played hockey?  I started playing for the first time last season

Why did you decide to take up hockey? A lot of my friends have had to move abroad in seek of work so I was looking for something to do in the evenings where I could meet new people but also get fit and have fun.

Favourite Sports Person?  Paul O’Connell

Biggest influence on your sporting life so far?  If I am being really honest, I would have to say my boyfriend although he would kill me for being so corny! A late bloomer in sports himself, he showed me how sport can be so good for both your mental and physical health. He opened up a whole new world to me of different types of training, what to eat and when, mobility work, mental training and the beloved foam roller! That is kind of corny isn't it.... Conor McGregor is also a hero...what a legend in positive thinking.

Best advice someone has ever given you? Always expect something amazing is about to happen

Favourite music? I am totally old school- the Eagles, chuck Barry or tony Bennett always get me in a good mood! I was defiantly born in the wrong year!

Favourite movie? Just one?? Muppets Christmas carol is my all time fav but I am a huge fan of the harry potter series! I am also a big child!

Who’s the tough nut of the team?  Kerryanne- that girl is so sweet and innocent until you have to play against her!

Who’s the quickest?  Aoife she is everywhere!

Who’s the joker of the team?  We have too many! Cólleen is brilliant for the colourful language jokes but Sharon has the best one liners! And she seems to say them at the perfect time...usually when we are so tired at the end of training or during a tough drill.

Who’s the worst time keeper on the team? Me - no matter how hard I try I always make it to training 10mins late!

Any advice for someone looking to try a new sport? Do it! It doesn't matter how little you know or how unfit you think you might be, there will always be someone worse off than you!! Haha ah no it's a great way to get fit, learn a new skill and meet some amazing people. Any sport is easy to pick up and there is always going to be a great group of people to help you along the way. The comraderie alone is brilliant. I never really played a team sport before so I was not used to having so many people congratulate you on a good run or for stopping the ball! Makes you feel amazing!
