Susan Waters

When did you first start playing hockey?

1st year in school... So that is about 20 years ago. Maybe its time to retire!

How long have you been with Newbridge HC?

I am in my 9th season with Newbridge HC.

Position on the 1sts?

Since Janis retired, I have been playing left back.

Do you play any other sports / activities?

At the moment I am not playing any other sports. Although during the Summer I tried a little bit of golf. But might wait until I retire from hockey to take it up fully.

Favourite Sports Person?

Maybe Glenn Ryan – best centre back ever.

Biggest influence on your sporting life so far?

I would think my Nana. She lived until she was 100 and half and came to a number of my games in her 100th year. She was a sports fanatic as a young girl. She encouraged me to keep up hockey after school.

Best advice someone has ever given you?

“BETTER LATE THAN NEVER”, for those who slag my time keeping.

and “Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.”

Favourite music?

Like a little bit of everything really. Anything upbeat that keeps you in good form after a tough day!

Favourite movie?

Like all the oldies, Dirty Dancing, Grease, Shawshank Redemption & There’s something about Mary.

Who would you say is the tough nut of the team?

Martina is by far the tough nut on the team. She doesn’t feel any pain. Who plays on in a match with broken bones? Bangs to the head? etc... Only Martina.

Who’s the quickest?

Jane or Louise.

Who’s the joker of the team?

Nat is a bit of a joker.

Who’s the worst time keeper on the team?

For some reason they all think I am a bad time keeper. I don’t know why!!! But I think Louise is most definitely way worse than me. She arrived an hour and half late for the bake off a few weeks. Ciara would be in the running too!

Any advice for someone looking to try a new sport?

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. Give it a go, what have you to lose? You will gain new friends, create many memories, have lots of laughs and try to keep fit all at the same time.
