May 6th saw the start of our Summer Hockey programme. We had 14 girls on the night, 2 faces which were brand new to the club so a massive welcome to them.
Our summer hockey programme aims to encourage new players, any past players looking to reconnect, any junior players who are looking to move up to senior this year, and anyone in general who wants to play on a non committal basis over the summer.
For any beginners out there don’t fret, we will always have someone on hand to go through the basics with you!! We also have sticks, but we do recommend that you wear shin guards and a mouth guard!
This will be continuing every second Wednesday until August 5th, with our next session taking place on May 20th. If you are interested in getting involved feel free to show up on the night or give Cólleen a shout on 0857054097.
Another initiative that has just started is Tricks 4 Sticks. Jenny Kavanagh, or Miss Kavanagh as she may be better know to some of you, in conjunction with the Irish Hockey Association has arranged for a qualified coach to deliver the tricks 4 sticks hockey programme in Scoil Bhride Athgarvan over a number of weeks with the aim being to establish a club school link, and encourage new players to the sport. There is a particular emphasis on encouraging boys to take up hockey, and also to keep our current junior members interested in the off season!
We hope to secure funding for tricks 4 sticks in a couple of other local primary and secondary schools from September onwards so we will keep you updated.
