2017/2018 season off to a cracking start!

Newbridge 3

Skerries 2

Newbridge Ladies got the 2017/2018 season off to a great start with a win against Skerries Saturday afternoon in Newbridge College. With Pam Ryan leading the team this year, the girls got off to a cracking start with a series of fast plays and winning short corners. The back line pushed hard from the outset ensuring the opposition were not getting within 25 yards of the goal.

The match was free flowing with both teams sharing the possession, however Pam Ryan's hard work gave Newbridge the opening goal. Jane Tynan, Anna Kelly & Aine Fisher continued to work hard in the first half but the Skerries defense managed to uphold only the one concession before the half time whistle.

With a few half time changes, young blood was introduced in to the Newbridge side with Ailbha MacTigue demonstrating how strong a player she is driving up the line with the ball. Emma Sherlock and Pam Ryan continued to work hard in the midfield resulting in another goal. With a fire in their bellies, Skerries continued to move strong against the Newbridge defense. Their consistency paid off and broke down the Newbridge press resulting in a goal. Off the back of the goal, Skerries' forwards made some quick runs into Newbridge's circle, only to be thwarted in their efforts by Newbridge defense made up of Aimee Boothman, Aoife Kavanagh, Kerry Ann Murtagh and Emma O'Connell.

Newbridge rallied and a fantastic play from Sue Waters through the centre into Emma Sherlock hit the backboard. With Newbridge legs tiring Skerries pushed through the midfield and defense to get another goal on Newbridge keeper Elaine Cox.

Knowing they had to work harder than ever, every Newbridge player pushed it to their max right up to the final whistle with some lovely plays by Corina Coughlan, Orla Stewart & Olivia Daly.

Pre-season traning provided by Brian O'Rourke was evident in the Newbridge Ladies fitness levels, and skill levels up to standard again with the guidance of long standing coach Owen O'Leary.

Newbridge are aiming to go out even stronger this coming weekend against Botanic.
